the word tanking mean a bad thing but i think it's slang

I've heard it used as slang to mean that something is going very badly.
I've also heard the meaning Chris mentioned about drinking too much alcohol, someone saying something like 'he's tanking it back tonight' would mean that the person is drinking a lot of alcohol tonight.

I've heard it used in England as slang for drinking too much alcohol.
But also a term in the building trade.
