Jetzt is used together with a word but doens't have to be behind the verb for example "Jetzt lerne ich Deutsch" would be correct as well Jetzt can also be used as a simple response for example if someone asks "Hast du Zeit?" I would say that the root of your question is connected to a difficult problem. Maybe you should know that many Germans whose English is not very good tend to use the ing-form too often. It is hard to say whether you would need a word like "jetzt" to be translated or whether using the ing-form is enough.
