A couple of questions on rhyming in Chinese poetry I've read that level tones rhyme with levels tones, and non-level with non-level ones. Does this mean that, for instance, ma1 only goes with ma1, while ma2, ma3 and ma4 all rhyme among themselves? Also, to Mandarin speakers, do syllables that end with "eng" rhyme with those that end with "ang"?

the first question is difficult to understand. hope you can express it in a detailed way or in Chinese. Ass for the second question, maybe you want to ask whether Chinese people differentiate ang and eng. In standard mandarin Chinese they are different, but in few dialects, some words end with ang or eng won't be differentiated.

for first question, not exactly, if you got some vocabulary in Chinese character, that would be better to explain, like 媽媽 (ma1ma1) means mother, however like this name of one people 馬ma3麻ma2, her family is 馬ma3 and first name is 麻ma2 and for second one that would be not really, like these two words, end with eng "能"“neng” means enable and “昂”“Ang” means you lift up your head and raise up your chest, those two words are very different and won't get any connections in regular time even when you try to realize the feeling of poetry. To be honest, you mandarin must be good enough coz you've already started to read poetry, that's incredible.!!
