Compared to what? Daily, no. People have their own favourite ways of saying things. If you run into a "go poof" person, they may use this twice in a week. Not run into one of them for a while now. Maybe all those people of the previous generation, just went poof & were gone.

I would say not common at all. I've heard it said in the UK but not for years.
