Zaina's recommendation is certainly the best. I know one couple that received five toaster ovens as wedding presents - this was back before microwaves. One method of giving wedding presents in the U.S. is a gift registry. The coupld to be married submits a list of items they want or need to at least one store. On the wedding invitations, they put the stores they have registered with. When an invited person goes to the store, they can see the list of gifts and which ones have already been purchased. Does anybody else do this?

People usually give kitchen/household stuff... or just gift certificates. By my opinion some small personal and original gift + gift certificate is the best unless you're 100% sure what they need and like. Gift certificates are good because they can use those to buy what they really want and need lol instead of those fail gifts they end up disliking so much that they will hide them into the darkest depths of closets.

sheets. towels, pots, dishes, glasses, etc. (or ask them what they need)

well you know i have the same problem also, my mum will get married in october and i have no idea what to give them. Most people think of basic gifts such as: photo albums, kitchen things. However, most people already have those things as they are bringing two houses together, and then you end up getting double or triple of everything. If you are really unsure, theres no harm in asking those people for ideas or what they want, or even giving them some money so they can have money to spend on hoilday on the honeymoon, something like that, or money that they can use on what they want etc..
