粵語: Are there any grammatical patterns in Cantonese that do not exist in Mandarin and vice-versa? Hey everyone, Here is a question to those of you that speak both Cantonese and Mandarin that I've been meaning to ask for some time but have been forgetting to so every time I came on here. Lol. :) Are there any grammatical patterns in Cantonese, even at a basic level, that do not have Mandarin equivalents and vice-versa? If so, could you give me some examples? 唔該!

Yes, there are differences. My native language is Cantonese. I have never conducted a thorough study on this topic, but I can give you some bits and pieces of information for your reference: 1. In Mandarin, one says "我們管這個叫ABC" (We call this ABC). In Cantonese, we do not have this "管...叫..." pattern. We say "我地叫呢個做ABC". The pattern is "叫...做...". 2. In Mandarin, one says "我先開始" (I start first). In Cantonese, we say "我開始先". The position of "先" (first) is different. The patterns are respectively "subject+先+verb" and "subject+verb+先". 3. In Mandarin, one says "我比你高" (I am taller than you). In Cantonese, we say "我高過你". The patterns are respectively "subject+比+object+adjective" and "subject+adjective+過+object". 4. "嗎" is a very common question marker in Mandarin. In Cantonese, it is only used in some fixed expressions like "你好嗎?"

Sorry, i don't understand your question. But I try to understand and answer it. Cantones speaker also know how to use Mandarin writing system. But Mandarin speaker dont know Cantones speaker writing system. But our speaking are totally different. EG.Do you eat dinner today? Cantones speaker will say : 你今晚食左飯味呀? But their teacher request they write this in exam:你吃過晚飯了嗎? And this writing system is same as Mandarin speaker. We call it 書面語, more formal in writing.
