Both of those greetings are very informal (I'd say that "what's up" is more informal than "how's it going"). Either one would be fine if, for example, you are meeting with a group of friends and there is someone you don't know in the group, or if you were starting a conversation with someone in a very informal setting, like a bar. If you are meeting a complete stranger in a more formal context, you're probably better served with, "Hi, how are you?" Sentence correction: When I want to start a conversation with a foreigner who is speaking English, should I say " What's up " or " Hey, How's i going"? ( We don't know each other). By the way , did I write this sentence with correct grammar? Please tell me. thanks a lot

By the way, is the grammar of this sentence correct? I corrected your question. wanna is spoken slang with friends, it is not written. I would say: "Hi, how's it going?" You want to "link" the "s" and the "it", so it will sound like Hi, howzit going? You can use "Hey" and "What's up?" with close friends, they are more casual.
