Advice/ Advise? Which word to use? I asked someone for advice/ advise. After listening to him I thanked him by saying, Thank you for your advice/ advise. Please explain briefly why advice or advise is used? Thanks.

Advise is the verb, advice is the noun. When you advise someone, you are giving them advice. They are pronounced differently too. In ‘advise’, the ‘s’ has a ‘z’ sound. In ‘advice’, the ‘c’ has an ‘s’ sound.

Hi Crisna, In both cases use 'advice', the noun, because you are referring to a thing, intangible though it may be. We know it's the noun and not the verb because we can substitute another noun and the sentence still make sense: I asked someone for WATER. Therefore, I asked someone for ADVICE.

Thanks, Alaina. That does help. Next time, I'll find which part of speech a word belongs to and then use it accordingly :-)

you should use "advice" because it is a noun. "thank you for your advice" advise is a verb. "i advise you to do this better." hope this helps! :)
