What does "стройный" specifically mean in Russian Стройный is skinny but what type of skinny? Does it mean: Thin? Slim? Svelte? Can it refer to inanimate objects? What do synonyms: тощий, тонкий, худой mean and how are they different?

"slim". Or svelte (though wonderfully, I never came across this English word before). You say it when you want to say that someone/somethign is thin, and you want it to sound nice. Its another meaning is somethign along the line or "harmonious" - and it affects its body meaning. "тощий" - somewhat colloquial, rather negative. "Skinny". Can also be applied to your purse;) "худой" - neutral style. Sometimes negative, sometimes not. It means more than just "not fat", but it is the most neutral word if you want to sound matter of fact without positive/negative. "Thin"? But only said about people. Also in means "bad" (archaic/dialectal version of "bad") : - ) "тонкий" - the most abstract of these words. A pensil can be so. Can be applied to people too (not often, usually young girls). Also can mean 'fine'.

I can explain what 'стройный' means in Russian. It means that you have a good, nice and athletic body type. I can't say what one-word can describe it in English. And yes, there are inanimate meanings with sound (стройный звук means a good and harmonious sound), with rows (стройные ряды - for example for battle formations it can be like 'straight rows')

Hi. Стройный means slim. It is used when you want to say about girls or women. Стройный means that someone looks pretty good. It’s rarely used regarding men, but sometimes we do this. You can also use this word regarding inanimate objects if you want to sound more poetic. Стройный + inanimate objects is often used for describing something as beautiful, nice-looking. But it’s not conversational language. For example: Вдоль деревенской дороги росли стройные кипарисы.
