Can I describe a person as cute? Years ago, a Singaporean told me, i should not say someone is cute. Cute is for animals or objects. I should say a person is sweet, not cute. Is that true?

In the US, “cute” is used to describe engaging or attractive children and attractive young women, say, up to early 20s. It’s usually not used to describe men, though it is sometimes used by young women to describe young men they find attractive.

As Ed says, 'cute' is used in US English to mean attractive. For example, American teenage girls might chat about which members of a boyband they think is 'cute'. It is not generally used in British English with this meaning. In British English, 'cute' does not mean good-looking: it suggests fluffy kittens in a basket. That's not to say that you can never use it for a person. The internet is full of videos of chubby-faced toddlers saying and doing appealing things, and we'd certainly use 'cute' to describe them.

What Business English Ed said.... Cute is almost always applied to young people. A woman once referred to my wife and me as a "cute" couple. Being 60 years old, I was a little offended. I am too old to be cute. Never refer to a women over 25 years old as "cute" ....they would not be happy.

That person lied. You can surely describe someone as "cute".

It is fine, it is used to describe a person that you find attractive without being to bold. Like beautiful or gorgeous.
