Hello Edward, It's about collocation. It is similar to words that go with 'rain' in English and Chinese. For example in Chinese I can say 'big rain'. That doesn't collocate in English where I have to say,'heavy rain'. So for 'progress' one of the words that collocates is 'make' as in 'making progress' but not 'big'. Making great progress / making significant progress/ making zero progress would be examples that do collocate. I hope this helps, Regards, Richard

Make great progress, without the 'a'.

we don't usually talk about SIZE when we talk about progress, usually we talk about QUANTITY (uncountable). So we can say A LOT OF progress, or I've made LITTLE progress, or SOME progress. Notice that it's uncountable, so we don't need the article 'a'. I've made great progress sounds natural to me too. Hope that helps! Michael.
