there are lots of meanings for なんだ.
in that phrase it is used because of a explanation. it will always appear after an explanation.
ex. Nihon ga daisuki nanda. (I love Japan.)
it may be also an emphasiser tool.
nanda also means "what is it?" or "what do you want" if said more roughly
