Hello! The pronoun 'they' is better to use because 'dogs' is plural. Similarly, 'were' is the correct word to use instead of 'was.'
However this applies if you are specifically saying the dogs were cute. If you are saying the experience of playing with the dogs was cute, then 'It was' is correct.
