Thoughts on learning Thai Thoughts on learning Thai The first thing is to try and "forget" your language and "pick up" the new system. This can be quite difficult, but a serious learner should make the effort. In other words, try to think in the new language. It will help immensely. "Sentence constructions are particular to each language and generally can not be translated into Thai language directly. While on some occasions what you are saying might not be wrong, to a native speaker it might not sound right." Try to listen to the sounds of the language closely-- this is especially important in Thai which is a tonal language. The way to succeed here is to listen, then speak and practice as much as possible. "Speaking is the only requirement to be fluent. It is normal for babies and children to learn speaking first, become fluent, then start reading, then writing." "Watch movies, listen to music, sing songs, and browse newspapers and magazines. It’s fun and helps improve your pronunciation and comprehension." Listen to the sound of your own voice.! Even though you might not like hearing your own voice, this is a very useful way to find out what's wrong with your spoken Thai. Record yourself speaking and then listen to it, or ask a native speaker for some advice. Finally you should study from the best source you can find. Study material that you can trust, that is commonly used, and that is correct." Ideally "a professional experienced Thai language tutor" is the best.! "It is difficult to learn from books alone and you don't want to learn something incorrectly. Then it is more difficult to get it right." Don't forget! "Learning Thai takes time and patience. Try to relax and take it easy. The most important thing you need in the beginning is a good vocabulary. Daily practice is very important. Starting with a foundation and slowly build on it." Do not worry about making mistakes, in fact the more mistakes you make, the more you will learn from them. Practice everyday and be confident! from http://www.kruuweeteachthai.com/1…/thoughts-on-learning-thai

Learn Thai # common mistake 2 A common mistake I hear (again) “It doesn’t rain” ไม่ฝนตก mâi fǒn tòk ฝนตก fǒn tòk is in fact two words 1. "ฝน fǒn" means “rain" (as a noun/a subject of the sentence) 2. "ตก tòk" “to fall” ( as a verb) Thai Structure : Subject (noun) + Verb = ฝน+ตก (rain fall) OR Subject (noun) + mâi ไม่ (not/negative form) + Verb ฝน +ไม่ +ตก (rain not fall) “It doesn’t rain” Correct sentence : ฝนไม่ตก fǒn mâi tòk ไม่ฝนตก mâi fǒn tòk (literally, not-rain-fall), you should say instead that : ฝนไม่ตก fǒn mâi tòk (rain-not-fall). Make better sense?

What kind of learner are you?

1. Visual learners
If you use the visual style, you prefer using images, pictures, colors, and maps to organize information and communicate with others. You can easily visualize objects, plans and outcomes in your mind's eye. You also have a good spatial sense, which gives you a good sense of direction. You can easily find your way around using maps, and you rarely get lost. When you walk out of an elevator, you instinctively know which way to return!
2. auditory learners
If you use the aural style, you like to work with sound and music. You have a good sense of pitch and rhythm. You typically can sing, play a musical instrument, or identify the sounds of different instruments. Certain music invokes strong emotions. You notice the music playing in the background of movies, TV shows and other media. You often find yourself humming or tapping a song or jingle, or a theme or jingle pops into your head without prompting.
3. kinesthetic learners
If the physical style is more like you, it's likely that you use your body and sense of touch to learn about the world around you. It's likely you like sports and exercise, and other physical activities such as gardening or woodworking. You like to think out issues, ideas and problems while you exercise. You would rather go for a run or walk if something is bothering you, rather than sitting at home. You are more sensitive to the physical world around you. You notice and appreciate textures, for example in clothes or furniture. You like 'getting your hands dirty,' or making models, or working out jigsaws. You typically use larger hand gestures and other body language to communicate. You probably don't mind getting up and dancing either, at least when the time is..

Learn Thai # common mistake 1 There are common mistakes I hear from students #1- " I want to eat Som-tam” เอากินส้มตำ ao gin Som-tam Correct sentence is อยากกินต้มยำ yàak gin Som-tam The word เอา ao is often translated as “to want” because it is used the same way, but in fact it literally means “to take” or "want to have" So when you want "to do something"you wouldn't say “I take eat”. or "I want to have eat" Actually the word for “to want (to do something)” is อยาก yàak, so “want to eat” is อยากกิน "yàak kin" in Thai. ...... want to go to Chiangmai = ....... yàak pai Chiangmai. #2- “I watched a movie yesterday” – เมื่อวานฉันดูหนังแล้ว mʉ̂awaan chán duu nǎng lɛ́ɛw Correct sentence is เมื่อวานฉันดูหนัง mʉ̂awaan chán duu nǎng Tense does not really exist in Thai.! Thais express time by using time-related words such as “now”ตอนนี้, “yesterday เมื่อวานนี้”, “next week อาทิตย์หน้า”, "last Friday วันศุกร์ที่แล้ว"etc. The word แล้ว lɛ́ɛw means “already” It doesn't really express past tense, it expresses “completion” such as something being done already. In this case, the word เมื่อวาน mʉ̂awaan (yesterday) makes it clear by it self that it happened yesterday. To be continued ^______^
