As soon as you know three words, I’ll ask you to put them into a sentence. With me you won’t be ‘taught’ per se, you will be invited to learn by doing, to try things out, and to accumulate competence upon what you already know. My students quickly learn to ask me ‘can I say…? (voinks mä sanoa…?)’ followed by something they have just formulated. Before long, they start to create perfectly applicable and natural sounding Finnish sentences (which can often be short and make absolutely no sense when translated to English) by applying Finnish the same way Finns do.

During my career as a Finnish teacher, I have taught many students from different cultures and backgrounds. I understand well that people are different, and we learn a language by different ways and speed. I believe it is my strength that I myself learned Finnish as an adult. I understand well how it is like to learn Finnish from learners' perspectives, and I have a lot of experience to share my journeys if someone is interested in. At the same time, I am professional with a lot of experience in teaching online. I try to offer a class, that students feel a bit more confident or feel closer to Finnish language after each lesson.

Mistakes are part of the learning journey. I love to challenge my students to take steps beyond what they believe they are capable of. However I don't push you beyond your limits, but I will always help you when I see you are stuck. I also acknowledge our different personalities and will learn the approach you prefer me to have in supporting you, whether it's to give more space or to be more intently present.

The more you do it, the more naturally you'll learn to express yourself in any language! Listening to native-level speech is also essential—especially the real, everyday language that people actually use. In Finnish, for instance, spoken language can be quite different from the formal version. I'm an empathetic and patient teacher, and I can easily adjust my speaking pace and style to suit any level. My lessons are relaxed and supportive, creating a safe space for learning. I'm always happy to tailor the lessons to each student's individual needs.

Learning something new always involves a degree of vulnerability, and I believe that vulnerability should be met with respect, patience, and encouragement. I enjoy having interactive lessons where we exchange ideas and thoughts, especially about languages. I believe in being open about my own shortcomings — every language has vast and unfamiliar areas, even for professionals.

As a teacher I am encouraging, and try to activate my students to use as much Finnish as possible. People usually tell me they can be themselves in my company. This no stress state helps them to express themselves better in Finnish as the brain has no reason to activate the sympathetic nervous system (fight/flight/freeze response) which would compromise higher brain functions. I have about 2000 hours of teaching experience, mostly online but also face to face.

I love learning languages myself, and it's inspiring to see others be inspired to learn as well. I want to encourage my students to not be afraid to make mistakes. My lessons will focus on conversational practice instead of formal lessons, but I want to help my students to improve in an efficient way and will correct their mistakes as needed.
