일반적으로는 영어에서 한국어로 번역하는 건 힘들인데도 미국 작가 존 그린의 소설을 한국어로 번역하는 건 특히 힘들었더라고요. 존 그림님은 영어 원어민인데 소설을 쓰면 말장난이고 언어유희를 자꾸 써요. 기지가 가득한 책을 쓰는 거예요. 그래서 저는 6월에 그린님의 “The Fault in Our Stars”의 한국어 버전을 읽으면서 한국어 번역이 그린님이 쓴 영어 말장난의 뉘앙스를 가끔 포착하지 못했더라고요. 제 말은 제가 번역가가 영어 원작품의 뉘앙스를 모두 표현할 수 있다는 게 기대되고 있는 게 아니는 거죠. 이건 그냥 관찰했던 거에요. 언어마다 번역하지 못할 그 언어다운 특징이 있죠.
