In Part 4 of Neil McTaggart’s 1920s Canadian journey, he wakes in his new home and begins his first full day of farm work in rural Ontario.

In this fourth part of the Neil McTaggart historical  series, 18-year-old Neil wakes in his small back room on his uncle’s Ontario farm in the 1920s. Holding the stone his mother gave him, he faces the uncertainty of a new life. As the household stirs, Neil shares his first breakfast with his aunt, uncle, and cousins, before being introduced to the daily routine of Canadian farm life — feeding chickens, hauling water, and checking the fences.

Phở là món ăn tinh túy của Việt Nam, từ phở dùng để chỉ loại phở được sử dụng trong công thức nấu ăn. Mì gạo cùng với những miếng thịt bò hoặc thịt gà luộc vừa phải trong một món bò kho thịnh soạn. Phổ biến hơn cả trong số hai loại phở được biết đến rộng rãi là phở Hà Nội . Có nguồn gốc từ miền Bắc,  được biết đến bởi nước dùng và chỉ với một miếng chanh và vài lát ớt. phở Nam , có nước dùng thanh hơn và được phục vụ với một vài loại thảo mộc tươi như giá đỗ, húng quế và bạc hà.
Bí quyết để có một bát phở ngon nằm ở nước dùng. Nước dùng thường được ngâm với hoa hồi thơm, đinh hương và quế để tạo vị ngọt tự nhiên cho món ăn. Món ăn này được tìm thấy ở hầu hết các góc phố và thường được bán để ăn sáng mà người nước ngoài không hề hay biết.

Phở is the quintessential Vietnamese dish, the word phở referring to the type of noodle used in the recipe. Flat rice noodles with medium-rare slivers of beef or boiled chicken in a hearty beef stock. The more popular of the two widely known varieties is phở Hanoi. Originally from the north, it is distinguished by a clear broth and dressed only with a squeeze of lemon and slices of bird’s eye chili. The southern iteration, phở Nam, has a murkier broth and is served with a few of fresh herbs like bean sprouts, basil and mint.
The secret to a good bowl of phở lies in its stock. The broth is usually infused with fragrant star anise, clove and cinnamon to lend a natural sweetness to the mix. This dish is found on almost every street corner and is actually consumed for breakfast, unbeknownst to foreigners.

こんにちは～！マルハバ！サウジの日本語の先生、佳子です＾＾
みなさんー！お元気ですかー？ものすごく久しぶりの投稿ですね～！
しばらくお休みしていてすみませんでした。
実は前回の投稿、7月末からいろいろありまして、定期的な投稿が難しかったんです。
今日は「私のここ8か月の生活について」お話しします。
去年の8月に6歳の息子がサウジのインターナショナルスクールに入学し、晴れて小学1年生になりました。夏に一か月サマースクールに通ったものの、かなり久しぶりの集団生活ということもあり、入学当日から大泣きし、2日目から母子登校が始まりました。もちろん親が学校に滞在するのは基本的にNGなのですが、息子が特別支援が必要な状態だったので、私がしばらく学校にいるのを許可してくれました。最初の2週間くらいは、教室のドアの近くに座らせ、ちょっとドアを開けていました。私は、ドアを開けたら息子がいつも私が見える場所に座っていました。それからドアを閉め、私が見えない状態に。最初の数カ月は一人のクラスメート以外は誰とも話さなかったので、授業や授業外でヘルプが必要な場合は、手伝っていました。少しずつ、本当に少しずつではありますが、いくつかの授業は一人で受けられたり、話せる人も増えていきました。チャレンジのレベルに応じて、報酬も与えたりしていましたが、正直12月末まで先が見えませんでした。
しかし、1月に新学期が始まり、新学期の初日は行く前に大泣きしたものの、最初の週から明らかにクラスメートや先生方とたくさん話すようになったのです。前学期はほとんど教室の外で待機していましたが、「これはいける！」と思って、ほとんどの授業で私は遠い場所で過ごしていました。2月の中間試験の際も、ほとんど一人で受けました。大進歩です！しかし、息子は算数・科学の授業が好きではありませんでした。その先生が苦手だったので、特に算数の授業は私のヘルプが必要で、そこが懸念点でした。
3月からラマダンが始まり、学校の時間が少し短くなりました。息子も「友達5人いる！」と自ら言ったので、「これはチャンス！」と思って、2週目から「日曜日と水曜日は一人で行こうね」と言っていかせてみたら意外とスムーズに。結局週5日間一人で学校に行けるようになりました。本当に本当に嬉しかったです。たくさん、たくさん褒めました！
息子は「好きなランチとおやつ、ゲーム・タブレット3時間」という報酬をゲットしましたよ～！
私はというと、まだ平日にレッスンを入れるのは難しいので、公園でジョギングやアラビア語・英語の勉強に励んでいます！7月にサウジで運転免許も取得したので、車でいろいろ行ける範囲も広げています。運転については別の投稿で詳しくお話ししたいと思います。

Pendant tout l'hiver, bien au chaud au fond de son terrier, que fait Mascotte la marmotte ?
Elle dort... Elle a accroché une pancarte à l’entrée: Ne pas déranger, j’attends le printemps !
Un jour, Oscar, le lézard, a voulu lui faire une farce, il est entré dans le terrier et a crié :
- Réveille-toi, Mascotte, c'est le printemps !
On était en plein hiver, il y avait même de la neige ! Mascotte, encore tout endormie, a fait quelques pas, mais, quand elle a senti le froid, elle est repartie à toute vitesse, pas contente du tout.
Oscar riait beaucoup.
- Quand tu dormiras au soleil, j’irai te tirer par la queue, a-t-elle promis. Puis elle s’est rendormie en rêvant à l'été et aux fleurs qui recouvrent la montagne.
