Level C1 (approx. band 7-8) · Academic and General Training Academic English often packs an idea into a noun. Compare "Because the population grew rapidly, the city needed more housing" with "Rapid population growth increased the demand for housing." The second is shorter and more academic. This is nominalisation: turning verbs and adjectives into nouns. In this episode: • From verb and adjective to noun • How the sentence changes • Noun phrases for task 1 and task 2 • Don't make it vague • Model • Language bridge • Practice • Self-check questions with answers Key points: • learn each verb and adjective together with its noun form. • when a verb becomes a noun, its adverb becomes an adjective, and you add a preposition and a new verb. • a noun phrase can turn a whole idea into a subject, and a summary noun such as "this relocation" links sentences. • nominalise to make ideas compact, but keep the doer clear and avoid long chains of "of" phrases.
