Awkward is that perfect blend of embarrassment, discomfort and uncertainty that arises in social situations, either from an uncomfortable silence or because of something someone has either said or done. It sounded like someone burped, and then everything felt awkward. It might be an awkward topic for you, but... Wow...that was an awkward silence! Mr. Bean is an awkward guy, because what seems to be a social "norm" to him makes others uncomfortable. He always makes a situation awkward.
