If you want people to understand you when you write, you are going to have to learn to read Chinese characters. It might be something you are not super excited about, but there is really no other way around it. You don't necessarily need to learn to handwrite the characters, as you can download free software that converts pinyin to characters (if you don't have one of those, this one is good: http://pinyin.sogou.com/ , just click the green button), still you have to know what the characters look like to ensure you are making sense. As I am sure you know, there are many possible meanings for each pinyin unit, so "xue" could mean “学 - study", "雪 - snow", "靴 - boots", and a few others. You could potentially add tone numbers to your pinyin to make it a little easier to decipher, "Wo3 xiang3 xue2xi Zhong1wen2..." but characters are really what you'll have to start learning if you want to communicate through writing. If you look at the responses below, even though you translated what you wrote in English and it was clear what you were talking about, there was some confusion about your "xuexie", one person thought you were saying "学写 － to learn to write" and another thought you were saying "学习 － to study/learn". What I mean is, pinyin is an excellent learning tool, but it's not great for communication--you really need to learn characters if you want to improve. This book series: "A Key to Chinese Speech and Writing, by Joel Bellassan and Zhang Pengpeng" is really good in my opinion, it's what I've been using to teach myself. I have found learning to handwrite the characters has really helped me to remember them. Also, if you can speak some Chinese, you probably recognize a good number of characters already.
