As Bonita said in the comments, the word 'than' is used when comparing things.

"Jane is taller than Eric."  (Bonita's example.)

"I like movies more than books."

"English is easier to learn than Arabic."

The word 'then' has two meanings, both related to time.  First, it can mean "after that".

"We went to dinner and then to a movie."

"I will study first, then do some exercise, and then go out."

Second, the word 'then' can mean "at that time".

"We studied English at school, but I did not like English then."

"I woke up at 5:00 a.m.  I felt tired then, but now I feel okay."

It suggests you have a hearing issue with the two words, since they belong in different universes grammatically. I suspect you are hearing 'then' as 'than' or vice versa.

The word then relates to time, for example, "Go straight, then make a right." The word than is used in comparison, for example, "Malena is smarter than Luca." This website gives a better explanation http://www.elearnenglishlanguage.com/blog/english-mistakes/than-vs-then/

Than is used as a comparison (jane is taller than Eric) or He looks better than you. Then is used for actions in time (If I go to bed early then I will get up on time)
