'I have got' is frequently misused, and is usually wrong. I have got is not special grammar, but lazy English. What is the 'got' meant to convey? Received? or Possession? If possession, it is redundant, because the 'have' already denotes possession. Use another word instead of 'got' - I got angry --> I became angry, just to see that 'got' is nothing special, 'I have got his letter' ==> 'I have received his letter'

I've always been told that 'have got' is used in BRITISH English when we talk about 'possessions'. I have got a car, I have got a house, I have got a kitten... However, as far as I know, only the British use 'have got' , because the Americans use just 'have'
