Correction please! I have just come through this sentence while reading an article: " The ideal culture, he writes, would provide both for a person’s physical needs and for the intellectual freedom to develop one’s selfhood. Most cultures and subcultures – political, religious, and social – fail to meet this tall order." . What does "tall order" mean here? Could it mean "unreachable aim"? And what other phrases would you use to deliver the same meaning? Could we say "this high order" instead of "this tall order"?

Tall order? I have just come through this sentence while reading an article: " The ideal culture, he writes, would provide both for a person’s physical needs and for the intellectual freedom to develop one’s selfhood. Most cultures and subcultures – political, religious, and social – fail to meet this tall order." . What does "tall order" mean here? Could it mean "unreachable aim"? And what other phrases would you use to deliver the same meaning? Could we say "this high order" instead of "this tall order"?The first time I read it, I felt the word "tall" is like the height of a mountain, which could be difficult to climb and reach the aim on its top. But then Dan told me that it is not right to say "high order", so I thought maybe "long order" would deliver the same meaning of "tall order"; as if reaching the aim would be a long and difficult journey "like on a track". I am trying to make sense of the phrase, What do you think?

A website like Youglish but to learn Farsi ?

https://youglish.com/

I use Youglish to learn English & Spanish. It makes a huge difference in my learning & most of you who has tried it before would know what I mean. Now, I am learning Farsi & wonder; is there any website offers the same as Youglish but for Farsi ?

Happy , Happier than , The happiest . I went out with my family last week to the beach . My husband was happy cause it was his first time to get fresh air after two weeks of exhausting intense office-work . But I think I was happier than him cause I got the chance to take my grandma with us to enjoy sunlight after the long bleak days she spent at the hospital . As for the kids , they were the happiest , eating enormous amount of ice cream & playing with sand & getting dirty without worrying of my shouting in anger at them . It was really a delightful day

What makes me connected to the languages I study? For me , listening to people speaking French or Spanish or Persian is a great pleasure ! Even if I am not able to understand a word ! Many years ago & by mere coincidence I came a cross these lines from a poem : " Caminante, no hay camino, se hace camino al andar " , I read its English translation & it just fascinated me & still ! So , to be able to read the original poem written by Antonio Machado, without the need to the mediation of translation & its approaches is what keeps me going through the boring stages of learning Spanish ! As for English , I would not be able to communicate with you all without it ! :) it is a necessity to learn it & along with the learning journey I have evolved , grown & changed in a good way ! I want more of that good changing , so , I keep learning . With Persian I can read Rumi poems in his own authentic words . Japanese language to me is the whole world seen in a different way ! To write with Japanese would be an amazing , challenging experience ! So , I am really enthusiastic about where my feet would take me & what kinds of paths would be forged while I am learning Japanese .

I have just begun my Spanish learning journey & I am searching & reading to set up plans to study Persian & Japanese . * How come that " for good " means " forever " !! Thanks a bunch ! Is there a negative meaning in this phrase ?! If so , where does the negativity come from ? I mean , as a learner of English I can not feel the negativity when I say it or even receive it from others !

You don't learn to walk by following rules. You learn by doing, and by falling over. You don't learn to walk by following rules. You learn by doing, and by falling over. In schools , they have taught us something different ! Now , I am trying to reprogram my brain , hoping that life will be more easier embracing this fact : " I don't learn to walk by following rules.I learn by doing, and by falling over."
