Treto is a small town located near Colindres and Laredo, two important cities in Cantabria. In Treto, there’s an estuary that flows into the Cantabrian Sea. My parents-in-law have a duplex flat there, so we decided to visit for a short trip. The journey was smooth, although we had a few mishaps with our daughter. She threw up in the car, wet herself twice, and her clothes ended up smelling terrible. When we arrived, we couldn’t find any open restaurants. While my wife went to the supermarket, I stayed behind to feed our baby with some leftovers we had prepared for the trip. After getting to the flat, I turned on the fuses, water, and heating to make the house comfortable. Once we had lunch, my wife took a nap while I explored the town with our daughter. It was a peaceful walk, and the fresh air felt nice after the chaotic start to the day. When my wife woke up, she called me to join her at the supermarket to pick up some supplies. That evening, we struggled to get our daughter to sleep, so we ended up going to bed quite late, completely exhausted. Despite the challenges, it was nice to be in Treto, enjoying the calm surroundings and spending time together as a family.

Traditional Slovak clothes, or “kroje,” are an incredible part of our cultural heritage. Each region in Slovakia has its own unique style of kroje, reflecting the local history, customs, and even climate. For example, in regions like Detva or Čičmany, the kroje are richly decorated with intricate embroidery, often featuring bright floral patterns symbolizing prosperity and nature. The women’s kroje usually include a blouse, a vest, and a wide, beautifully embroidered skirt, often paired with an apron. The headwear also varies by region and age—young unmarried women might wear colorful ribbons, while married women traditionally wore kerchiefs or bonnets. Men’s kroje are simpler but still striking. They often consist of embroidered white linen shirts, wide trousers, and leather belts decorated with intricate patterns. In some areas, like in Horehronie, men would wear fur-lined vests or heavy woolen coats in colder seasons. What I find amazing about kroje is how every detail—from the color choices to the stitching—can tell a story about where the wearer is from and their role in the community. They’re more than just clothing; they’re like living history books of Slovakia.

I sometimes wonder if personalities are predetermined before we are born. It’s fascinating to think about whether our traits are shaped entirely by genetics or if there’s something deeper, like a soul or an energy, that already defines parts of who we are. At the same time, the environment we grow up in plays such a big role in shaping us. But what if certain aspects of our personality—like our strengths, weaknesses, or the way we connect with people—are already “written” before we even take our first breath? It makes me think about how much of “us” is truly ours from the start and how much we develop as we go through life. Maybe it’s a mix of both, but the idea that some parts of our personality might be predetermined feels both mysterious and fascinating.
