For this course, we're not going to talk about the religious side of Christmas (in case the title misled you) but rather about its cultural and traditional aspect and I would love to hear what you have to say about it. We'll start with basic (dare I say "trivial"?) things : - Are you a Christmas lover (like me) or a Grinch? - If you like it: what do you like most about Christmas ? If you don't, what don't you like about it? - What is the most memorable Christmas gift you ever got? / What's the lamest gift you ever got? - Have you already taken part in a "Secret Santa" or "Pass the parcel"? - What's the best Christmas song? - Do you like Christmas movie? - Which food do you make for Christmas in your country? - Do you like Christmas markets? - How do you decorate your Christmas tree? - When did you stop to believe in Santa? - Do you prefer to receive or give? - Did your perception of Christmas change from childhood to adulthood? - Do you have / like advent calendars? To more serious (dare I say controversial?) questions: - Is Christmas a materialistic celebration ? - What do you think of non-Western countries (e.g Japon, China...) celebrating Christmas? Is globalization to blame? - What is Christmas mostly about according to you? Celebrating the birth of Jesus? Spending (quality) time with the family? A welcome break in a hectic life? Eating good food? Receiving gifts? Offering gifts? Else? - Should we use natural Christmas tree (and the ecological consequence of cutting a tree), or should we invest in a plastic tree (not biodegradable but definitely more sustainable?) - And anything you'd like to share about the topic! A list of vocabulary related to Christmas will be available after purchase. I always try to instill a relaxed atmosphere (drinks allowed) and you'll definitely be invited to use "tu" :). Students will be able to work both on continuous and interactive oral expression and should grow their vocabulary regarding Christmas. Also, this session will allow to review several tenses (présent, passé composé, imparfait...)
