Hi! You’re listening to the 111 Tips for Learning a Language Podcast. This is episode 2. Relax and be in your comfort zone as I present to you today’s tip. Why do we learn a language? We all have our reasons. What is your main reason? Simply put what motivates you to learn this language? We all know what drives us to learn a language. Rarely though we capitalize on the main reason we are learning the language. For example I am learning French because I want to spend my summer vacations here. This is the main reason which motivates me to learn French. Once I am clear about my main reason for learning French, I will concentrate on tourist vocabulary phrases to practice informal conversation with the locals. I will learn simple sentences so that I can make friends with the French and be understood by them. Aspects of the French language like the technicalities of grammar and writing would not be important for now. Once I narrow down my learning motivation, I become fluent quicker in what I really want to accomplish in the first place. The first milestone of getting one aspect of the language done is the one which always inspires me to learn more. Think about it. What is your main reason for learning a language? Is it for the perfect holiday, work, leisure, cultural or business reasons? Concentrate on one scope and expand on that area first. Now, I will leave you to it. I want to speak English; this is the wrong goal!

Do you want to be more motivated to achieve your English-language-related goals but sometimes feel demotivated?

Do you feel the desire to achieve the goals faster but see yourself at a slow pace?

In psychology, a secondary gain is when you benefit from a problem. It’s when you receive advantages from unwanted conditions, circumstances, or limitations. In other words, you benefit from not overcoming problems. 

It doesn’t mean the problem is positive, but the benefits of having the problem support you in keeping it rather than solving it.

Secondary gains are guides to help you get unstuck. They’re an invitation to understand the advantages you receive from retaining problems instead of solving them.

In simple terms, you crave attention and accidentally injure yourself. As a result, people care for you. You get what you want (attention), but at the expense of what you don’t want (injury).

Is it now clear to you? What are your secondary gains from not following through on your language learning goals that you benefit from?

This might be a game-changer for you in learning to communicate in English confidently and fluently.

3. Offering a new product/service to reach new customers

Your business might be doing well, but there is no growth or development and there is a risk that your competitors might take away some of your customers. Innovation sometimes means developing a new product that targets a different market. Although video games were often played by boys, in 2006, video games giant Nintendo introduced the game console Nintendo Wii, successfully targeting girls and older customers with games like Cooking Mama and Brain Training.  

4. Changing the way you provide a service

By looking at the changes to the customer's lifestyle and needs, we sometimes realise that there might be better ways to serve them. Customers who do not have a lot of time might prefer to have their food or their shopping delivered to their homes, or they might like to do their banking online rather than in an actual bank.

Not all innovation will bring success to our businesses, but it can give us the opportunity to grow and learn more about what we do and what our customers might want.
