Collocations: The Word Partners of Everyday Hindi | Learn Hindi #250
Omschrijving
You can know every word in a sentence and still sound slightly odd, because words come with partners. In English we "make a decision", "take a photo" and "do the dishes", and nobody says "do a decision". Hindi has its own fixed partners, and they rarely match English.
In this episode:
• Eating and drinking: peena and khaana
• Things that come to you: aana and lagna
• The mind: dekhna, dena, lena, karna
• Housework partners
• Switches, doors and gadgets
• English-literal traps
• Practice
• Self-check questions with answers
Key Hindi from this episode:
बात करना (baat karna) = to talk. मम्मी से बात करो (Mummy se baat karo) = Talk to Mummy.
मदद करना (madad karna) = to help, and आराम करना (aaraam karna) = to rest.
काम करना (kaam karna) = to work, to do chores. घर का काम (ghar ka kaam) = housework.
Season 3 · Spoken Hindi at Home: the complete self-study course for English speakers. Every Hindi item is given in Devanagari, Hinglish and English. Take the 52-question quiz after listening.
Audio voiced with AI from an original script by Dr. Rashmi R Nair.
