Omschrijving
Inviting people to your home, or visiting someone else's, comes with set phrases on both sides. Learners who translate directly from their own language may say "Please enter my house" or "Eat more, eat more!", which sound stiff or pushy in Britain, or they may not know how to say no to more food politely. Many also miss that "Come round for tea" can mean an evening meal, not only a drink. In this episode: • Inviting • Welcoming guests • Food and drink • Leaving • Listening lab • Practice • Self-check questions with answers Key phrases from this episode: Would you like to come over for lunch? — a polite invitation Come round any time. — you're welcome whenever (casual) Shall I bring anything? — the guest offers to help Just bring yourselves! — you don't need to bring anything Could you bring a dessert? — a sweet dish for after the meal We'll get a takeaway. — we'll order ready-cooked food Around six-ish? — at about six o'clock Come in, come in! — warm welcome; the repeat sounds friendly Let me take your coat. — the host offers to put it away Make yourself at home. — relax as if it's your house Shoes off or on? — the guest checks the house habit Don't worry about your shoes. — keep them on Did you find us alright? — was the journey easy?
