Omschrijving
English has a whole family of words: someone, anyone, no one, something, nothing, somewhere, nowhere. English speakers try to translate each one directly, so "nobody came" becomes "aarum alla vannu", which makes no sense. Malayalam has a neat trick instead. In this episode: • Question words you already know • Add -enkilum for some and any • Add -um plus a negative for no one and nothing • Roughly: around ten, two or three • An invented scene: the lost keys • Language bridge • Practice • Self-check questions with answers Key phrases from this episode: ആര് (aaru) = who എന്ത് (enthu) = what എവിടെ (evide) = where എപ്പോൾ (eppol) = when എങ്ങനെ (engane) = how ഏത് (ethu) = which ആരെങ്കിലും (aarenkilum) = someone, anyone എന്തെങ്കിലും (enthenkilum) = something, anything എവിടെയെങ്കിലും (evideyenkilum) = somewhere, anywhere എപ്പോഴെങ്കിലും (eppozhenkilum) = sometime, ever എങ്ങനെയെങ്കിലും (enganeyenkilum) = somehow ഏതെങ്കിലും (ethenkilum) = any one ആരെങ്കിലും വന്നോ? (aarenkilum vanno?) = did anyone come? എന്തെങ്കിലും വേണോ? (enthenkilum veno?) = do you want anything? എന്തെങ്കിലും കഴിക്ക് (enthenkilum kazhikku) = eat something. എവിടെയെങ്കിലും വെക്ക് (evideyenkilum vekku) = put it somewhere. എങ്ങനെയെങ്കിലും ചെയ്യാം (enganeyenkilum cheyyaam) = we'll manage it somehow. ഏതെങ്കിലും ഒന്ന് എടുക്ക് (ethenkilum onnu edukku) = take any one. ആരും വന്നില്ല (aarum vannilla) = nobody came. ആരും ഇല്ല (aarum illa) = there's nobody here. ഒന്നും വേണ്ട (onnum venda) = I don't want anything. ഒന്നും ഇല്ല (onnum illa) = there's nothing.
