Learn English with Self-Driving Cars! (Beginner & Intermediate Vocabulary)

こんにちは。2022年、元号（げんごう）なら令和（れいわ）4年の7月24日、大相撲夏場所（おおずもうなつばしょ）が終わりました。大相撲とは一年（いちねん）に6回行われる（おこなわれる）、日本相撲協会（にほんすもうきょうかい）主催（しゅさい）の相撲興行（こうぎょう）です。

夏場所は名古屋（なごや）で行われるので、名古屋場所とも呼ばれます（よばれます）。場所という言葉の意味（いみ）はお判り（おわかり）でしょう。しかし相撲で使う言葉の「場所」は、英語（えいご）に訳（やく）する、英訳（えいやく）するとグランド・トーナメント（Grand Tournament）の意味になります。

「相撲興行」という言葉を使いました。興行とは観客（かんきゃく）を集め（あつめ）お金（かね）を払って（はらって）もらって、お芝居（しばい）や音楽（おんがく）、映画（えいが）などを見せる商売（しょうばい）、ビジネスです。

相撲は日本の国技（こくぎ）、日本を代表（だいひょう）するスポーツです。かつて神様（かみさま）に捧げる（ささげる）儀式（ぎしき）として、天皇（てんのう）や貴族（きぞく）が集まる（あつまる）宮廷（きゅうてい）で行われる（おこなわれる）行事（ぎょうじ）となり、とても大切（たいせつ）なイベントになっていました。

長い歴史（れきし）を持つ相撲の世界は、様々（さまざま）な特殊（とくしゅ）な言葉が使われます。例えば（たとえば）相撲の場所が終わる最後（さいご）の日を、「千秋楽」（せんしゅうらく）と呼びます。

この言葉は伝統（でんとう）ある舞台劇（ぶたいげき）、歌舞伎（かぶき）の世界でも使われます。そして千秋楽の日、略（りゃく）して「楽日」（らくび）という言葉は、今も演劇（えんげき）や映画（えいが）の興行の最後の日を示す（しめす）言葉として、これらの業界（ぎょうかい）関係者（かんけいしゃ）に使われています。

相撲取りの後援者（こうえんしゃ）、支援（しえん）者としてパトロン（patron）のように振る舞う人を、相撲の世界では「タニマチ」と呼びます。今、「料理を振る舞う」、「パトロンのように振る舞う」と言いました。それぞれの「振る舞う」の意味は分かりますか？

「タニマチ」とは「谷町」、大阪（おおさか）にある街（まち）の名です。昔、ここに住むお医者（いしゃ）さんが、あるいはお金持ち（おかねもち）が、お相撲さんの有名なパトロンになりました。それで、このような人物を「タニマチ」と呼ぶようになった、と言われています。

相撲の世界から生まれた「タニマチ」という言葉は、日本では他（ほか）の世界でも、芸術家（けいじゅつか）や芸能人（げいのうじん）やスポーツ選手のパトロンの意味で使われます。そしてタニマチが渡すお金などを、お相撲さんは「ごっつあんです！」と言って受け取る…、というイメージを多くの日本人は持っています。

「ごっつあんです！」は「ごちそうさまです」の意味です。力士は体の大きな太った（ふとった）人が多いので、多くの人が声が低い（ひくい）、だから「ごっつあんです！」になるのです。日本人にお相撲さんの真似（まね）をして下さい、と言うと多くの人がこんな風（ふう）に、「ごっつあんです！」と言うと思いますよ。

お相撲さんには日常（にちじょう）の挨拶（あいさつ）の言葉に「ごっつあんです！」を使う人もいます。さて、日本人は先輩（せんぱい）や会社（かいしゃ）の上司（じょうし）にお酒や料理を振る舞ってもらう、奢って（おごって）もらった時、お礼に「ごちそうさまです」と言いますが、親しみとジョークの意味を込めて力士のように「今日は、ごっつあんです！」と言ったりします。

もっとも、最近（さいきん）では「ごちそうになります」を略した「ゴチになります」、という言葉を使う人の方が多いかもしれません。「先輩、ゴチになります」などと言います。とても親しい間柄（あいだがら）なら、「ありがとうございます」を略した「あざーっす」を加えて、「ゴチになります、あざーっす！」と言う若い人もいるでしょう。

このような表現（ひょうげん）を、日本のマンガやアニメ、ドラマやバラエティー番組（ばんぐみ）で目にしたことはありませんか？日本の奇妙（きみょう）な言葉には、相撲など昔から続く文化にルーツがあるものが多数あり、また現在の流行から新しく生まれたものもあります。日本語を知ることは、日本の文化を知ることにもなります。

それでは、さようなら。どうも、「ごっつあんです！」。最後まで聞いていただき、「どもっ、あざっす！」。「どもっ、あざっす！」なんて本当に、本当に親しい人にしか使ってはいけない言葉です。先生（せんせい）や上司に言うと怒られ（おこられ）ますよ！どうも、ありがとうございました。
