Quantities, Fractions and Percentages: The Language of Data | IELTS #038
Omschrijving
Level B1 (approx. band 4-5) · Academic and General Training
Academic Task 1 is full of numbers. Copying "25%" again and again is boring, and it does not show that you can summarise. You need to describe numbers in words, approximate them, and compare them.
In this episode:
• Fractions and proportions
• Approximation
• Per cent, percentage and percentage points
• Writing numbers clearly
• Model
• Language bridge
• Practice
• Self-check questions with answers
Key points:
• fractions and majority words describe numbers in words, and the verb agrees with the noun after of.
• just over, just under, roughly and almost turn exact numbers into readable comparisons.
• per cent follows a number, percentage needs no number, and the gap between two percentages is measured in percentage points.
• write "three million" without s, use a point for decimals, and choose number for countable and amount for uncountable.
