Este cuento transcurre en un intervalo de tres trillones de años Iniciando en el año 2061. 

Dos técnicos de sistemas trabajan asistiendo a Multivac, una gigantesca computadora de kilómetros de tamaño que ayudó a trazar las trayectorias para el hombre llegar a la Luna, Marte y Venus. El 14 de mayo de 2061 Multivac cumplió su tarea más importante: almacenar la energía del Sol y utilizarla en el planeta Tierra. 

Aunque la felicidad era inmensa porque la energía obtenida era suficiente para abastecer todos los gastos energéticos de la humanidad por 20 mil millones de años,  aun así, el sol y todas las estrellas en el universo moriran y  por lo tanto  la civilización humana. ¿Sabría Multivac como devolver toda la energía al sol después de que este muriera?.  Los técnicos le preguntaron. Multivac no tenía datos suficientes para responder. 

Multivac  evolucionó en ACs planetarias: computadoras de 150 kilómetros cuadrados, que habían hecho posible los viajes interestelares y los saltos hiperespaciales. Luego de esta, vino la Microvac, con un tamaño mucho menor que las AC’s planetarias y mucho más poderosa que Multivac.

Con la ayuda de una Microvac se trasladaba Jerrodd, Jerrodine y Jerrodette I y II desde la Tierra hasta el planeta X-23. Microvac conducía  la nave, la abastecía de energía y realizaba los cálculos para los saltos hiperespaciales.

Durante el recorrido Jerrodine pensaba en la cantidad de planetas y estrellas, y como las siguientes generaciones de humanos seguirian viajando a otros planetas en busca de un lugar para vivir.

Jerrodd hizo caer en cuenta a Jerrodine de que esa dinámica no iba a durar para siempre porque las estrellas, las unidades fundamentales de energía iban a morir en algún momento, ¡la entropía debe aumentar!. ¿Será que Microvac tendría alguna solución para esto?. Todavía no tenía datos suficientes para responder.
