Omschrijving
In many varieties of English, questions swap the subject and the helping verb: "What do you want?", "Why didn't you come?", "Where is the office?" In indirect questions, the order switches back: "I asked where the office is." Indian English often reverses this pattern. In direct questions, many speakers keep statement order and use rising intonation or a question word: "What you want?", "Why you didn't come?", "You are coming?" In indirect questions, many speakers keep the question order: "I asked him where is the office." "Can you tell me what is the problem?" Research on Indian English grammar describes both patterns as widespread and systematic, linked in part to how questions are formed in many Indian languages. What you will learn: • Direct questions without inversion • Yes-no questions with statement order • Indirect questions with inversion • Intonation as the question signal • Polite question forms • Responding to the question, not the order • Practice: decode the question • Listening strategies • Self-check questions to test your ear Level: B1–B2. Self-study: listen, then take the quizzes. Audio voiced with AI from an original script by Dr. Rashmi R Nair.
