Omschrijving
Your grammar is correct, yet people react a fraction off. The missing piece is almost always politeness calibration. Textbooks teach directness and leave out softening. This class adds that layer, one step at a time: ഒന്ന് to make any request smaller, the request ladder from bare imperative to the adult default, hedges for your own opinions, the polite deferral, acknowledging the imposition, and the soft no. At the end, one blunt sentence is rebuilt with all seven layers. Words and phrases in this class: ഒന്ന് സഹായിക്കാമോ? (onnu sahaayikkaamo?) – could you just help? ഒന്ന് ചെയ്തു തരാമോ? (onnu cheythu tharaamo?) – could you just do it for me? ചെയ്യാമോ? (cheyyaamo?) – can it be done? എന്ന് തോന്നുന്നു (ennu thonnunnu) – it seems to me ഒരുപക്ഷേ (orupakshe) – perhaps ഏകദേശം (ekadesham) – approximately അവൻ വീട്ടിലായിരിക്കും (avan veettilaayirikkum) – he's probably at home എനിക്ക് ഉറപ്പില്ല (enikku urappilla) – I'm not sure ഞാൻ ഒന്ന് ആലോചിക്കട്ടെ (njaan onnu aalochikkatte) – let me think about it ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടാകുമോ? (buddhimuttaakumo?) – will it be any trouble? ഒരു കാര്യം ചോദിക്കട്ടെ? (oru kaaryam chodikkatte?) – may I ask something? ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടിച്ചതിൽ ക്ഷമിക്കണം (buddhimuttichathil kshamikkanam) – sorry for the trouble ഇപ്പോൾ ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടാണ് (ippol buddhimuttaanu) – it's difficult right now In this class: • ഒന്ന് — the one word that turns a demand into a small favour • The request ladder, from bare imperative to the polite default • Hedges, the -അട്ടെ deferral, and how to say no without saying no • All seven layers combined, using ചേട്ടാ and ചേച്ചീ Quizzes below.
