THE BACKWATERS കായൽ - kaayal - the lagoon, a brackish lake system running parallel to the coast വേമ്പനാട് കായൽ - Vembanad Kayal - the largest കെട്ടുവള്ളം - kettuvallam - houseboat, historically a rice barge, from കെട്ടുക (to tie), because the planks were stitched with coir rope rather than nailed വള്ളം - vallam - small country boat ചുണ്ടൻ വള്ളം - chundan vallam - the snake boat raced at Onam 2. THE HILLS മൂന്നാർ - Munnar - tea country; the name is മൂന്ന് + ആർ, three rivers തേയില - theyila - tea, the leaf; തേയിലത്തോട്ടം - theyilathottam - tea estate വയനാട് - Wayanad; തേക്കടി - Thekkady, the Periyar reserve; ആന - aana - elephant 3. THE COAST കോവളം Kovalam, വർക്കല Varkala, ബേക്കൽ Bekal കടൽ - kadal - the sea; തിര - thira - a wave; കടൽത്തീരം - kadalthiiram - beach 4.
