Settling In Kerala in Malayalam — Part 4: Rent, Bills, Repairs, Power Cuts | Learn Malayalam #109
Omschrijving
This class is for people arriving in Kerala to live, not to visit, and it covers what nobody teaches in the first month.
Five blocks: finding a house and the questions to ask before you rent (above all about water), the utilities and the bills, the people who keep a household running and how to address them, the things that break, and money in everyday life. You get an all-purpose 'it is not working' frame from the negative present (കത്തുന്നില്ല, കറങ്ങുന്നില്ല), and you learn why the advance deposit can be large and why a house found through people you know usually beats one found through an agent.
Words and phrases in this class:
വാടക (vaadaka) – rent
അഡ്വാൻസ് (advance) – advance deposit
വാടക എത്രയാണ്? (vaadaka ethrayaanu?) – how much is the rent?
വെള്ളം ഉണ്ടോ? (vellam undo?) – is there water?
ഒന്ന് കാണിച്ചുതരാമോ? (onnu kaanichutharaamo?) – could you show me around?
കറന്റ് പോയി (current poyi) – the power has gone
കറന്റ് വന്നു (current vannu) – the power is back
ഗ്യാസ് തീർന്നു (gas theernnu) – the gas has run out
ഇത് ശരിയാക്കാൻ പറ്റുമോ? (ithu shariyaakkaan pattumo?) – can this be fixed?
എത്രയാകും? (ethrayaakum?) – how much will it come to?
ടാപ്പ് ചോരുന്നു (tap chorunnu) – the tap is leaking
ലൈറ്റ് കത്തുന്നില്ല (light kathunnilla) – the light is not working
ചോർച്ചയുണ്ട് (chorchayundu) – there is a leak
In this class:

• Bills, gas cylinders and കറന്റ് പോയി
• Calling the plumber or electrician, and addressing them as ചേട്ടാ
