Feelings in Malayalam — Part 3: Why Anger Comes to You, Madi and Manassu | Learn Malayalam #74
Omschrijving
In English you are angry. In Malayalam, anger comes to you.
Malayalam frames emotion as something that arrives: you sit in the dative and the feeling happens to you (എനിക്ക് ദേഷ്യം വന്നു). This class builds the vocabulary on that frame: calm, relief and pride, four separate words for love and liking, including വാത്സല്യം, then sadness, upset, anger, fear and shyness. It also covers മടി, a can't-be-bothered feeling English has no clean word for, and മനസ്സ്, one word for mind and heart together. A note on how Kerala families show affection through care rather than declarations closes the class.
Words and phrases in this class:
എനിക്ക് സന്തോഷമായി (enikku santhoshamaayi) – I am happy (happiness came to me)
എനിക്ക് ദേഷ്യം വന്നു (enikku deshyam vannu) – I got angry (anger came to me)
എനിക്ക് പേടിയാകുന്നു (enikku pediyaakunnu) – I am becoming afraid
എനിക്ക് സമാധാനമായി (enikku samaadhaanamaayi) – I feel settled now
വലിയ ആശ്വാസമായി (valiya aashwaasamaayi) – that is a great relief
