EL MUSEO DEL AMBAR, CHIAPAS, MÉXICO.

Ubicado en lo que fue el convento de La Merced, se encuentra éste maravilloso e interesante museo de una resina fósil que, ha servido como ícono e inspiración de los Artesanos Chiapanecos: El Ámbar, la gema más característica de Chiapas. Mineros, artesanos y comerciantes del municipio de Simojovel tuvieron la iniciativa de crear este espacio de exhibición y venta de tan apreciada joya Chiapaneca; cuyos temas, contenidos y colecciones, fueron construidos a partir de sus ideas, experiencias, aportaciones y enriquecedoras propuestas.

El Ámbar, la gema más característica de Chiapas aquí se exhibe en sus diferentes presentaciones: piezas talladas, joyas y objetos de gran valor artesanal. El Ámbar ha sido utilizado por el hombre a través de la historia como ofrenda ceremonial, protección, con fines medicinales y como materia prima para elaborar amuletos, joyería y objetos de arte; además de aportar información importante sobre la vida extinta, a través del estudio de sus incrustaciones.

En los diferentes espacios se le muestra a los visitantes el Ámbar desde su origen, países donde existieron y existen yacimientos, cómo se formó, cómo se extrae, todos los usos prehispánicos y actuales.

El Museo del Ámbar de Chiapas se inaugura el 4 de diciembre del año 2000. Es el único de su tipo en América y de los pocos en el mundo. Cuenta con más de 300 piezas en exhibición, tanto en bruto como piezas que han elaborado los artesanos y han sido acreedoras a premios en el concurso estatal de ámbar.
