Kerala Names and Written Malayalam — Why Initials Are Not Middle Names | Learn Malayalam #337
Omschrijving
Written Malayalam you will actually have to read or produce — letters, applications, invitations, signs — and the Kerala name, which is not built the way you expect.
THE THING NOBODY WARNS VISITORS ABOUT
Most of Kerala has no surname tradition of the European or north Indian kind. What Malayali names carry instead are initials — and those initials are not middle names. They usually stand for the house name and the father's name. A name written as two initials followed by a given name typically expands to: house, father, then the person's own name.
That is why so many well-known Malayalis are known by their initials, and why, if you ask what someone's initials stand for, you will be given a house and a father rather than a Christian name.
തറവാട്ടുപേര് - tharavattuperu - the house name
In villages, houses have names, the names are old, and an address can be a house name and a place rather than a number and a street.
I am Dr. Reshmi R. Nair, an applied linguist from Kerala. I have taught hundreds of learners to speak Malayalam as it is actually spoken.
WHAT THIS MEANS IN PRACTICE
Do not assume the last element of a Malayali name is a family name shared with their siblings and parents — very often it is not.
Do not alphabetise Kerala names by the final word without checking.
Do not ask "what is your surname?" — ask what their initials stand for, which is a friendlier question and gets you the real answer.
And when you fill in a form, expect the initials to matter more than you think: they are how a person is distinguished from the four others in the village with the same given name.
Written Malayalam also has its own registers — the wording of an invitation, an application, a signboard — and the lesson works through each.
Do you know what your Malayali friend's initials stand for? Ask them, and tell me what you learn.
