Omschrijving
Malayalam is full of English words: bus, ticket, phone, current, tension, ready. English speakers expect these to be the easy part, yet they often miss them, because Malayalis say them the Malayalam way: ബസ്സ് (bassu) with a little -u at the end, ഫിലിം (philim) with an extra vowel, and with Malayalam endings glued on, as in ബസ്സിൽ (bassil) = on the bus. Learners also do the opposite: they say the English word in a crisp English accent with an English preposition, "in the bus", which breaks the Malayalam sentence. In this episode: • The little -u at the end • Extra vowels and changed sounds • Malayalam endings on english words • English verbs with cheyyuka and aakuka • Listening for loanwords • An invented scene: the phone call from the bus • Language bridge • Practice • Self-check questions with answers Key phrases from this episode: ബസ്സ് (bassu) = bus ടിക്കറ്റ് (tikkattu) = ticket ബുക്ക് (bukku) = book (notebook) ബാഗ് (baagu) = bag ലിഫ്റ്റ് (liftu) = lift ബ്രഷ് (brashu) = brush ഫിലിം (philim) = film ഗ്ലാസ്സ് (glaassu) = glass ബസ്സ് (bassu) = bus, with an "a" sound ലൈറ്റ് (lightu) = light റെഡി (ready) = ready കറന്റ് (current) = electricity: കറന്റ് പോയി (current poyi) = the power has gone ടെൻഷൻ (tension) = worry: ടെൻഷൻ അടിക്കണ്ട (tension adikkanda) = don't worry ബസ്സിൽ (bassil) = on the bus ഫോണിൽ (phonil) = on the phone ബാഗിൽ (baagil) = in the bag സ്റ്റേഷനിൽ (stationil) = at the station ഓഫീസിലേക്ക് (officilekku) = to the office ഡോക്ടറുടെ (doctorude) = the doctor's ടീച്ചർക്ക് (teacherkku) = to the teacher കാറിൽ (kaaril) = in the car Learn Spoken Malayalam at Home: a complete course in everyday spoken Malayalam for English speakers.
