HELP! Some people think that strict punishments for driving offences are the key to reducing traffic accidents. Others, however, believe that other measures would be more effective in improving road safety. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion on this IELTS topic. Although many people believe stronger punishments for breaking the rules when driving are essential to decreasing casualties. Others think that safety on the road could be enhance by applying more practical laws. This essay will evaluate both perspectives and will give a final opinion on them. To start with, it is important to mention that there some who state that harder punishments lead to the reduction of crashes on the road. Nowadays, people tend to be easily distracted by their phones, therefore, reckless driving is on high demand. This seems to be a minor problem with fatal consequences, however, if more serious punishments are given to those who ignore the law, these scenarios could be easily avoid. On the other hand, more effective measures are believed to be the solution for some people. Reducing the speed limit in massive highways and having more traffic controls along the roads are some examples that could potentially save lives. Despite these measures, many drivers will still be irresponsible behind the wheel since they would know that breaking the rules will not have a real repercussion in their lives. In my opinion, although strengthening measures to improve safety on the road is a good idea, this is not enough. That is the reason why stronger and more strict laws must be passed so drivers are aware of their acts. People need to understand that for every action we take there are consequences, and in many cases such consequences can lead to death. To sum up, strict punishments are vital to decrease the amount of car accidents for some people, whilst for others implementing more efficient road safety measures is the way this issue should be addressed.

This is the last part. To me, having a more solid system of punishment is probably the only way in which people are mindful of their reckless acts, and can thus avoid terrible accidents.

On the other hand, more effective measures are believed to be the solution by some people. Reducing the speed limits on expressways (they are called motorways in the UK) and having more traffic controls along the roads are some examples that could potentially save lives. Despite these measures, many drivers will still be irresponsible behind the wheel since they would know that breaking the rules will not have real repercussions on their lives.
