Are phrasal verbs different in Am Eng and BrE?

Hi Jessica,  I would say that some phrasal verbs do have different meanings. For example, to call on in the UK means to visit someone whereas in the states, we tend to use call on when we are asking someone to speak. For example, "The teacher called on me but I didnt know the answer". In the US, we also use to call on to ask someone to do something.  For example, "She called on all Americans to be more tolerant of each other". Hope that helps!

Most are the same, some have diverged into different meaning, or different shade of the same meaning.

I use 'to call on' in two of the ways she mentions (to visit someone or to call on someone to do something or to speak).

The only one I wouldn't say is, The teacher called on me. I'd add, The teacher called on me to speak/answer. Or maybe I'd just say, The teacher called on me. I'd certainly say, The president called on her vice-president to say a few words (to the audience).

So I think I use them the same way.

So, Americans don't say, "I called on you the other day but you were out." So what would an American understand by that? (what about To call IN ON somebody?)
