It’s always easier to talk than to write. Even as a native English speaker, I can’t express myself the same way when I speak as I do when I write. Writing takes time and thought. I may sound articulate online or in my writing, but when I speak, I can’t always access or recall 1) the vocabulary, 2) the rhythm, or 3) the style of how I write.
My Portuguese is the same. When speaking, I have to think of words immediately. I know I have a wider vocabulary in English, but it only really shows in my writing because I have more time to think.
And this applies to most people, honestly.
Think about the people you encounter online. They don’t act, look, or sound exactly the same in person as they do online. Maybe a little, but rarely completely.
I asked ChatGPT whether there’s a difference between written and verbal communication. It said yes, because they function differently. Writing is more deliberate, precise, and slower, while speaking is more loose, faster, and instinctive.
I could never talk as long as I write. I’d be exhausted. When I speak, I keep things short. But when I write, it always ends up being long.
