What does “ home in on st” mean. It’s such an odd expression. We know the meaning home as somebody’s house.

It’s “hone”. Hone in on something.
Ex I am honing in on this job perspective.
The word comes from è honing a sharp blade.

It’s interesting that it sounds odd to you. The idea is that ‘home’ is what is important- where you should be or want to be.
My dog was lost in the rubble. I used his whimpering to home in on his location. (Go to where he is)
We need to home in on the real reasons for our declining sales. (Find out)
You need to stop wasting your time on dating apps and start homing in on Claire, who’s great for you and likes you. (Focus on)
‘hone in’ is an expression with a slightly different meaning.
