In China, garbage classification has been pushed/encouraged/in the works for years, but never really got off the ground. Since September 1st, 2019, Shanghai has implemented the strictest policy of rubbish separation among Chinese cities. Here, trash is divided into four types, just like the picture shows: hazardous waste, recyclable waste, household food waste, and residual waste. In the beginning, the local government made great efforts to ensure the realization of this policy, mobilizing all of the resources, personnel, and communities to advertise garbage classification and (to) supervise infractions. And these efforts have paid off. Citizens have formed the good habit of separating waste and thus the disposal of garbage becomes more effective. Now, the other cities have also followed the Shanghai’s example, making similar rules to promote recycling and waste sorting.
