SEIT vs. VOR – Two small German words, one important difference! Both words are commonly used when talking about time, but they mean different things. SEIT = SINCE / FOR Use „seit“ when something started in the past and is still happening now. „Ich lerne seit zwei Jahren Deutsch.“ → I have been learning German for two years. „Ich wohne seit 2022 in Berlin.“ → I have been living in Berlin since 2022. VOR = AGO Use „vor“ when talking about something that happened in the past. „Ich habe vor zwei Jahren angefangen, Deutsch zu lernen.“ → I started learning German two years ago. „Ich bin vor drei Monaten nach Deutschland gezogen.“ → I moved to Germany three months ago. Here's an easy way to remember: SEIT → It started in the past and is still continuing. VOR → It happened in the past. One more useful tip: German usually uses the present tense with „seit“, even when English uses the present perfect continuous. „Ich lerne seit zwei Jahren Deutsch.“ NOT „Ich habe seit zwei Jahren Deutsch gelernt“ when you mean you're still learning. Understanding small differences like this can make your German sound much more natural in everyday conversations.
