I'm Mexican and i'm from a city named Torreón, located in a region called Comarca Lagunera. It is something like lagoon region and this name is due to this reason, even though nowadays this is an arid desert. In the past this region had several small lagoons called Mayran lagoons, over time, these lagoons got dried and this place became a desert. Now it's possible to find some fossils of aquatic species here. This city has grown fast because it’s good geographic location (they also say it's a place with a good logistics) unfortunately this means it's important for both good and bad people including drugs cartels. Around 10 years ago this was like hell, shootings everywhere, lots of federal police, soldiers and marines, lots of people murdered. Now it's much more quiet, and people feel much safer about going out and having a good time in a bar or pub or a restaurant, as a desert region it is really warm in most of the year, so for the people from cold countries I think it would be a good place
