A subject does something.
An object has something done to it.
This is more important than word order in deciding what is the subject and object of a sentence.
Did the telephone do something or have something done to it?
It had something done to it. What? Someone invented it!
Therefore it must be the object.
And did Bell do something or have something done to him?
He did something. What? He invented something
Therefore he must be the subject.
Some passive sentences have two objects but that’s another topic!
