Typically It is used in mechanical terms. The action of grinding is two objects. One object on the other rubbing, breaking and wearing away or eroding the other. In this context it is used to descibe people wearing away at each other. People getting too close for comfort as there are too many people in one space. Not so easy to explain as it is not used very often in this context.
