What’s the difference between pastry and baked good/ bakery product? Can they be used interchangeably? Are cakes, pies, tarts, cookies, bisquits, muffins, pretzels, buns etc. pastries or baked goods or bakery products? Are pastries only sweet or they can be salty, bitter etc?

Hi Ilia, Baked goods / products = general term which includes anything made of flour, such as bread, cakes, pizza, cookies, etc. Pastries are a type of baked product which are made only from pastry (a firm, fatty, "short" dough), but not regular (bread) dough or batter (a thin dough for pouring). However, we don't call all baked goods made with pastry "pastries", though. Here in the UK, pastries are snacks like sausage rolls, croissants, etc but NOT usually quiches or pies (even though they also contain baked pastry) - I have no idea why this is! Dan
